HSS surveyed members to find out what they do to stay well. Here are some inspiring responses.
I take a multivitamin every night before bed. Also, no matter how stressful work gets, I know that I will go home to my family every day--that keeps me sane!
Use the elliptical trainer at the gym for at least 30 minutes and circuit training, Monday through Friday.

Exercise 7 days a week, alternating among hand weights, yoga stretching, dance aerobics, and walking my dog. I drink water rather than caffeinated or sweetened beverages. I have an occasional glass of red wine and love dark chocolate. I have not eaten at fast food outlets for 10 years. I keep healthy snacks in my desk.
I check my bloodsugar 6-8 times per day, manage my insulin pump, and visit my primary care doctor every 3 months, my Endocrinologist every 6 months, and the opthamologist every 6 months. I also eat as much organic whole food as possible and as little processed and preserved foods as possible. I take the stairs at work if I am going 3 or less floors. I drink lots of water and try to be positive, friendly, and upbeat at work.
I eat fruit and vegetables on a daily basis. I am using the stairs at work more and more. I don't use alcohol or recreational drugs. I also don't use over the counter drugs. I see a accupuncturist/chinese masseuse on a regular basis. I live in Sonoma County, where I cannot see or hear my neighbors and I wake up to the sounds of the wind in the trees.
I do Tai Chi, try to eat organic, more fruits and vegetables, and I take vitamins, minerals, and supplements.
Take public transportation and then walk to work, 20 minutes a day.

I swim twice a week and walk the other days. Sometimes I walk home - about an hour. I eat a lot of fruit, but the problem is getting enough vegetables. I started keeping carrots in the fridge at work. I set my watch to beep every hour and stop and do a short stretch.
Yoga, weight training and walking..
Walk to work twice a week (40 minutes). Eat lots of fruits and vegetables. Exercise 2-3 times per week (running and yoga). Spend lots of time outside with my 3-year old son.
Weight and cardio train 6 days a week.
I perform a half hour exercise routine almost every morning, eat whole foods (locally grown if possible, some in my own backyard) that I prepare myself, and take long walks at least a couple of times a week. I also sing with a chorus, volunteer, and see friends as often as I can.
Watch my food portions; choose healthy alternatives; exercise at Curves; try to remember to laugh at myself each day (i.e. not take myself or my job too seriously).

Yoga and walking on the beach
Walk 10 to 15 minutes to the work place each morning and after lunch, walk another 15 minutes and as well as after work. Go to the gym during the weekend.
I walk at least thirty minutes six days a week. Three days a week I lift weights. Everyday I do stretches. Play golf at least twice a week most weeks.

I ride a bike to BART and ride from BART to work. At least once a week I take a long route home for an extra 30 minutes (or more) of extra riding time.
I take yoga class twice a week at CCSF. I walk about 1/2 hour a day; I don't have a car, so it's walks to the BART and bus (from 1-5 blocks), and distances that are under a mile. I am vegan, so no dairy in addition to meat. I am doing my best to avoid processed foods.
Eat less meat and fat but more vegetables and fruits and less processed food; use stairwells as much as possible so I walk more; think positively and optimistically.
I pray every day and start the day with a positive mind. I watch what I eat and read the labels on the products that I buy. I get a physical exam once a year and am conscious of the areas of my health that require monitoring.

I keep in touch with family and enjoy their company. I get theraputic massages once a month. I meditate and enjoy soothing music. I laugh and watch funny movies that make me smile. I stay positive and look at the bright side even when things are difficult. I surround myself with positive people. I take piano lessons and try new music. I read, write and enjoy learning new things. I embroider and make beautiful art. I make scrapbooks and work on family genealogy. I create new recipes and love to entertain. I bake fresh fruit pies and give them to others. I spend precious time with my elderly mother and see every minute with her as a blessing. I pray daily. I dance. I am contantly grateful.
Golf and walk.
I try to eat healthy meals most of the time. I have an exercycle and I use it for 30 minutes on average 5 days a week. When I take the bus I get off a stop early and walk the rest of the way home if the weather is good.
Sleep a lot, and eat well.
Go to the gym (Curves) 3 times a week and walk after and walk two more days a week. Eat oatmeal in the morning. Laugh a lot at life's predicaments.
Walk 2-3 miles a day, practice martial arts, try to get enough sleep, try to maintain a healthy diet, enjoy time with my wife, and maintain friendships and family ties.
I spend a lot of time outdoors. I hike (well, I call it hiking, someone else might call it strolling) in pleasant areas. I walk several blocks to the grocery store and carry my purchases home in a backpack.
I am constantly learning something new. Since retiring, I've read 4 books on composting and I'm taking a composting class. It's rewarding to turn garbage into compost, which nourishes my garden. Learning about this has led to other new interests, such as recycling and restoration of habitat for wildlife. Life is so much more interesting when you acquire new knowledge and skills.

Emphasize low-fat, low-sodium foods, and lots of fruits (no sugar) and vegetables (plain, steamed), along with other high-fiber foods (whole grain bread, oatmeal etc.) Take senior multivitamin daily, and calcium 2 times a day. Also drink 2-3 cups non-fat milk daily. Always eat low-fat high-fiber breakfast; almost always sit down with family for dinner, usually home-cooked from scratch -- very few prepared foods. Schedule regular health check-ups. TRY to sleep 7-8 hours a night. Enjoy family, friends, and work.

Try to eat nutritious food, balanced diet, moderate excercise, no soft drinks..a few glasses of wine a week...some months none at all due to being out of state caring for my elderly parent...take medications and vitamins.
Walk or swim in warm water. (I have a back injury.) I also try to eat 5 serving of fruits and veggies and stay away from refined sugar.
